The Cinderscars Project eBook Kaylee Browncoat Reviews

Reviewer Teresa Fallen Angel

Summary

Received for an honest review.

This was a dystopian story where the world is divided into separate ares controlled by individual popes who rule through fear. Science created the Cinderscar Project where anyone who broke the law had a scar appear on their body to show everyone their miss deals. Josephine began to question the rules when she was jumped by a young man who appeared ragged and starved. Even her parents tried to explain the necessity of the rules until her father accused of murder changing the course of Josephine's life. Josephine starts to snoop around to find the truth, but what she uncovers could change everything.

This makes you wonder with all of today's genetic manipulation if something like this could happen. Even with federal courts some people may be willing to break the rules on the off chance that they could make a break through. The old saying that the ends justifies the means until something tragic happens. While I enjoyed this story there were a few parts where the story seemed to take change before returning to where it had been. One example would be after Josephine jumped off a cliff to save a friend. If those areas could be corrected it would make the plot flow more smoothly. In all this is definitely worth a read for anyone who enjoys futuristic stories.
Southern author Kaylee Browncoat was born and raised in a normal small town in the South where she grew up reading about dystopian worlds. Now an adult, she writes about worlds that are not always as ideal as they first appear. Her first book was THE CLONE – a very fine paranormal dystopian novel she co-authored with Beau Bishop. Now she offers her own, single author novel - CINDERSCARS – a novel that is Book 1 of her series she is calling The Cinderscars Project

From Kaylee’s Prologue the darkness of her writing is apparent – and seductive to the reader – ‘Everything would soon be perfect. Pope Matthæus stared out over the inner city. This far above the ground, he could see parts of the train tracks that bordered the heart of Anaxgora. It was a fence, weather the dumb animals inside it recognized that or not. They instinctively shied away from it, staying huddled warm and ignorant in their cloistered homes. They knew nothing but the fields, the food, the knowledge he saw fit to dispense. They were precious, his lambs. And they loved him, as a good flock should. He put a hand on the tempered glass, leaning further against the thick wooden banister that kept him from pressing up against the glass. Too many men, other popes such as he, had jumped from this glass tower. Too weak, all of them, to do what must be done. Some of the lambs must be slaughtered. The blemished had no place in the world he was about to forge. They could no longer spare the time to chase after those who wandered. The Miracle of Science had done great things. They had wiped out disease, torn down the ancient warmongering behemoth that had called itself a governing body. They had created a perfect, productive society, built on reason, discovery, and honesty. But an infection still festered in the outer limits. Crime was not gone, despite their efforts to discourage it through the Cinderscar Project. Ignorance of the wolves outside the fence would be the death of his flock. So he would slaughter a handful, to save thousands. It would be worth the momentary pain and confusion of his flock, to rid them of the danger forever. The outer limits would be purged, and a new order would be born. The plan was nearly complete. He only needed five thousand of them, and the rest could burn. Everything would soon be perfect.’

Kaylee provides a fine synopsis at the beginning of her book – a map of where this initial adventure is heading ‘Cinderscars never lie. Josephine Martin has never questioned this simple truth. Since the great plague nearly wiped out humanity, cinderscars have been there to single out the wicked, and protect the chosen from genetic deviants who would plunge the world back into ruin. So decrees the Miracle of Science. But when Josephine’s father stands accused of murder, she knows it has to be a mistake. But the only person who believes her is a mysterious boy with arms covered in cinderscars. Pursued by inquisitors, Josephine must uncover the truth and rescue her father. Though that truth may destroy their very society.’

Kaylee’s decision to revise her original Cinderscars proves to be a wise choice – more deeply developed characters, better transitions among the diverse elements of the story, and in general a more polished evidence of fine writing. Finishing this novel provides that much-lauded result of wishing for the next installment. That is the suggestion of a successful novel and series and now that is here. Grady Harp, January 17

Excellent YA dystopian story. Unique plot and interesting characters. Definitely a keeper.
This was a very interesting book as it had a unique story line. I loved the interesting twists and turns of the story, Josie's determination and strength, Cooper and his humor, and Lauren's snark. I received a free copy of this book and volunteered to review it.
Josephine (Josie) has obeyed, and done everything expected of her, so she has avoided getting any cinderscars, which are earned via bad behaviour. What could go wrong if the the wicked are marked for their crimes? Follow Josie through this journey of discovery, where her eyes are opened to what is really happening, when she starts questioning why her Father is accused of murder (she doesn't feel that he could have done it). Why could he have been framed? Can she find and prove what is going on, before it's too late for her father? And what are the consequences, of what she might find? An intriguing journey for a girl that starts off a bit spoilt by her good life, and has to struggle to survive against big odds. I loved the interesting twists and turns of the story, Josie's determination and strength, Cooper and his humour, and Lauren's snark.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
